What Door Handles Actually Sell in Nigeria (And What Doesn’t) β€” 10 Years of Experience

Let me show you our top 3 finishes from 2025:

Finish Percentage of Sales
Satin Nickel 60%
Polished Chrome 25%
Matte Black 15%

That’s right β€” satin nickel alone makes up 60% of our sales. Fancy finishes like antique bronze? They look nice, but they just don’t sell.

This guide isn’t about “the perfect door handle” β€” it’s about what actually sells in Nigeria, based on 10 years of orders from 500+ customers.

First: Lever vs Knob vs Pull β€” What Sells?

#1 Seller: Lever Handles (75% of Our Handle Sales)

Lever handles are by far the most popular in Nigeria. Why?

  • Easy to use β€” kids, elderly, people with hands full β€” everyone can use a lever handle
  • Modern look β€” architects and estate developers like them
  • Sells in every city β€” Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano β€” they all buy lever handles

What Lever Handles Sell:

  • Mid-range ($2.00-$5.00) β€” 80% of our lever handle sales
  • Satin nickel finish β€” 60% of those
  • Simple, clean design β€” nothing too fancy

#2 Seller: Door Knobs (20% of Our Handle Sales)

Door knobs are still around, but they’re mostly for:

  • Traditional homes
  • Bedroom and bathroom doors
  • Budget projects

They don’t sell as well as levers, but you should still stock a few.

#3 Seller: Pull Handles (5% of Our Handle Sales)

Pull handles are niche. They sell for:

  • Sliding doors
  • Commercial entrances
  • Modern, minimalist projects

Small volume, but higher margins.

Finish Showdown β€” What Actually Sells (And What Doesn’t)

#1: Satin Nickel (60% of Sales)

This is the workhorse. Satin nickel:

  • Hides fingerprints
  • Looks good in both traditional and modern homes
  • Is what 60% of our customers ask for

Who buys it? Everyone. Builders, estate developers, homeowners, hardware shops.

Quick Story An Abuja developer used to buy 100% satin nickel handles. One time he tried polished chrome for a project β€” the fingerprints showed everything. He switched to satin nickel, and the callbacks went away.

Pro Tip: Satin nickel hides fingerprints. If you’re not sure what to stock, just stock satin nickel. It sells.

#2: Polished Chrome (25% of Sales)

Bright, shiny, modern β€” but it shows every fingerprint. Sells in Lagos and Abuja for modern projects, but people get annoyed by the fingerprints.

#3: Matte Black (15% of Sales, Growing Fast)

Matte black is growing fast. Architects love it for modern estates. But it’s still small β€” only 15% of our handle sales. Expect this to keep growing, though.

What Doesn’t Sell (But Everyone Tries)

  • Antique Bronze β€” looks nice in the catalog, but in 10 years we’ve sold fewer than 500 pieces
  • Gold/Brass β€” too expensive, and only for luxury projects
  • Fancy Finishes (Oil Rubbed Bronze, etc.) β€” looks beautiful, but doesn’t move off the shelf

My Advice: Stock 70% satin nickel, 20% polished chrome, 10% matte black. That’s what sells.

Material Showdown β€” What Actually Sells

#1: Zinc Alloy (50% of Our Handle Sales)

Zinc alloy is the sweet spot for most Nigerian customers:

  • Cost-effective β€” $1.50-$5.00 range is what sells
  • Looks good β€” can be plated to look like stainless steel or brass
  • Works great for interior doors β€” which is 80% of the market

#2: Stainless Steel (SS201) (35% of Our Handle Sales)

SS201 is our second biggest seller:

  • Feels solid β€” customers like the weight
  • Doesn’t rust β€” well, not in dry climates like Abuja
  • Good for exterior doors in inland cities

#3: Stainless Steel (SS304) (10% of Our Handle Sales)

SS304 is only for coastal cities (Lagos, Port Harcourt):

  • Worth the extra cost β€” doesn’t rust in salt air
  • More expensive β€” but customers will pay for it if they live near the coast

#4: Brass (5% of Our Handle Sales)

Brass is only for luxury projects. Very small volume, but great margins.

Size Matters β€” What Actually Sells

Backset: 60mm is King (80% of Orders)

60mm is the standard in Nigeria. If you only stock one backset, stock 60mm.

We do get 70mm orders occasionally, but 60mm is 80% of our backset sales.

Handle Length: 120-150mm for Interior, 150-180mm for Exterior

Interior doors: 120-150mm handles (70% of orders) Exterior doors: 150-180mm handles (30% of orders)

Mistakes I’ve Seen (So You Don’t Have To)

Mistake #1: Trying to Sell Fancy Finishes That Don’t Move

I’ve had customers order antique bronze handles, and then they sit in their warehouse for a year. Fancy finishes look nice in the catalog, but they just don’t sell in Nigeria.

Mistake #2: Trying to Be too “Modern” Too Fast

Matte black is growing, but it’s still only 15% of sales. Don’t go all in on it yet.

Mistake #3: Ignoring Climate

In Lagos and Port Harcourt, SS201 will rust. Use SS304 instead. In Abuja and Kano, SS201 is fine.

Quick Story A Port Harcourt customer once ordered a container of SS201 handles for an estate. He thought they were “stainless steel” so they’d be fine. A year later, they all had rust spots. He had to replace them all with SS304, and he still orders SS304 from us.

Mistake #4: Ignoring the Fingerprint Problem

Polished chrome looks beautiful when it’s new. But people touch door handles all day β€” and you see every fingerprint. Satin nickel hides that.

My Recommendation (What We Tell New Customers)

If You’re Just Starting Out

  1. Stock 70% satin nickel, 20% polished chrome, 10% matte black
  2. Focus on lever handles β€” 75% of our handle sales are levers
  3. Use zinc alloy for interior doors β€” 50% of our handle sales are zinc alloy
  4. Use SS201 for exterior inland doors β€” works great in Abuja and Kano
  5. Use SS304 for exterior coastal doors β€” don’t make the same mistake as my Port Harcourt customer

If You’re Established

  1. Listen to your customers β€” if they keep asking for matte black, stock more
  2. Don’t waste money on fancy finishes β€” antique bronze looks nice, but it doesn’t sell
  3. Remember the climate β€” SS304 for coastal, SS201 for inland

Conclusion (10 Years in 3 Sentences)

Satin nickel is king β€” it makes up 60% of our handle sales for a reason. Lever handles beat knobs β€” 75% of our handle sales are levers. Climate matters β€” what sells in Abuja doesn’t always work in Lagos.

If you’re not sure what to order, just ask us β€” we’ve seen what works in Nigeria for 10 years.
