Best Material for Door Handles: Stainless Steel vs Zinc Alloy [2026 Guide]
Stainless Steel vs Zinc Alloy Door Handles for Nigeria: Which is Better? [2026 Guide]
Let me start with a story from 2019, when I made a costly mistake. A new customer from Port Harcourt ordered 2,000 SS201 handles for a beachfront estate project. I warned him SS201 would rust, but he said “it looks the same and saves money.”
Six months later, he was back β all 2,000 handles had rust spots. He lost the trust of his client, and I lost a good customer.
That’s why I’m writing this β not as some perfect “expert guide,” but as someone who’s seen every mistake in the Nigerian market over the past decade.
Quick Table of What Actually Sells
| Material | Sells Best In | Price | Margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| SS201 | Inland (Abuja, Kano) | $$ | 45-55% |
| SS304 | Coastal (Lagos, PH) | $$$ | 50-60% |
| Zinc Alloy | Everywhere (budget) | $ | 50-60% |
| Aluminum | Modern projects | $$ | 40-50% |
| Brass | Luxury only | $$$$ | 60-70% |
Stainless Steel 201 (SS201) β The “Looks Great Until It Rains” Option
Let me be honest: SS201 is our best-selling material overall, but it’s not for everyone.
What’s Good About It
- Looks almost identical to SS304 β most customers can’t tell the difference
- Cheaper β 40-50% less than SS304
- Perfect for inland cities β Abuja, Kano, Kaduna (dry climate)
What’s Bad About It
- Will rust in coastal areas β I’ve seen it happen again and again in Lagos and Port Harcourt
- Customers get angry when it rusts β they feel lied to, even if you warned them
Price Range
- Our wholesale price: $1.50 - $5.00 per handle
- Retail in Nigeria: β¦2,500 - β¦8,000
Who Should Buy This
β
Abuja builders β dry climate, no salt air
β
Kano distributors β northern market loves the “stainless look” at budget price
β
Student housing projects β high volume, low budget
β
Inland states β Enugu, Benin, Ibadan
Who Should NOT Buy This
β Lagos beachfront projects β I’ve seen this fail too many times
β Port Harcourt oil companies β they need something that can take salt air
β High-end clients β they expect it to last forever
Quick Story
Last year, an Abuja builder ordered 5,000 SS201 handles for a 500-unit estate. He told me “it never rains in Abuja like it does in Lagos.” That was 18 months ago β he just reordered another 3,000.
SS201 works β just use it in the right places.
Stainless Steel 304 (SS304) β The “Set It and Forget It” Option
SS304 is my personal favorite for Nigeria. Why? Because once you install it, you never hear from the customer again (in a good way).
What’s Good About It
- Actually won’t rust β even in Lagos or Port Harcourt salt air
- Customers love it β it feels premium, and it lasts
- Higher margins for you β even though it costs more upfront
What’s Bad About It
- More expensive β customers hesitate at first
- Heavier β shipping costs a bit more
Price Range
- Our wholesale price: $3.00 - $12.00 per handle
- Retail in Nigeria: β¦5,000 - β¦20,000
Who Should Buy This
β
Lagos high-end estates β my Lagos customers swear by this
β
Port Harcourt oil & gas projects β they need durability
β
Luxury hotels β want something that still looks good in 10 years
β
Bathroom doors β humidity? No problem
Who Should NOT Buy This
β Extreme budget projects β if the client only cares about lowest price
β Student housing β overkill (they just need something that works for 5 years)
Quick Story
In 2021, a Lagos developer ordered SS304 handles for a Lekki estate. He complained about the cost, but ordered anyway. Last month, he called to order for his third project. “I don’t get callbacks about rust anymore,” he said. “It’s worth the extra money.”
SS304 costs more upfront, but it saves you headaches later.
Zinc Alloy β The “Looks Expensive, Isn’t” Option
Zinc alloy is the workhorse of the Nigerian budget market. It doesn’t last as long, but it looks premium β and that’s what sells.
What’s Good About It
- Looks great β you can make intricate designs with it
- Cheap β $1.00 - $5.00 wholesale
- High margins β 50-60% if you price it right
What’s Bad About It
- Will crack if dropped β I’ve seen customers return boxes of handles that cracked during shipping
- Not for coastal exterior doors β will corrode without good plating
- Shorter lifespan β 8-12 years (vs 15-25 for SS304)
Price Range
- Our wholesale price: $1.00 - $5.00 per handle
- Retail in Nigeria: β¦1,800 - β¦8,000
Who Should Buy This
β
Every market β it sells everywhere
β
Residential interior doors β bedrooms, living rooms
β
Hotels β they love the fancy designs at budget price
Who Should NOT Buy This
β Exterior doors in coastal areas β will corrode
β High-traffic commercial doors β will crack sooner
Quick Tip
Always order a few extra β zinc alloy sometimes cracks during shipping or installation, and customers will ask for replacements.
Aluminum β The “Lightweight Modern” Option
Aluminum is growing in Nigeria, especially in Abuja and Lagos for modern-looking projects.
What’s Good About It
- Lightweight β won’t sag doors over time
- Natural corrosion resistance β great for coastal (but SS304 is still better)
- Modern look β architects love it
What’s Bad About It
- Feels “cheap” to some customers β it’s light, so people think it’s low quality
- Scratches easier β softer than steel
- Not for high-security β easier to break
Price Range
- Our wholesale price: $2.00 - $8.00 per handle
- Retail in Nigeria: β¦3,500 - β¦13,000
Who Should Buy This
β
Modern projects β Abuja architects love it
β
Lightweight doors β won’t sag
β
Commercial buildings β offices, hospitals
Brass β The “Luxury Only” Option
Brass is beautiful, but it’s a tiny part of our sales β maybe 5% of orders.
What’s Good About It
- Looks amazing β timeless, premium feel
- Lasts forever β 20-30 years easily
- Customers will pay premium β 60-70% margins
What’s Bad About It
- Expensive β $8.00 - $80.00 per handle
- High maintenance β needs polishing to keep shine
- Small market β only luxury projects buy it
Price Range
- Our wholesale price: $8.00 - $80.00+ per handle
- Retail in Nigeria: β¦13,000 - β¦130,000+
Who Should Buy This
β
Luxury estates in Ikoyi, Victoria Island
β
Heritage restoration projects
β
Premium hotels β they love the timeless look
My Recommendation (After 10 Years of Mistakes)
If You’re Just Starting
- Start with zinc alloy β it sells everywhere, low risk
- Add SS201 β for inland markets
- Get a few SS304 samples β show to coastal clients
- Skip brass at first β too niche
If You’re Established
- Mix them β offer SS304 for exterior, SS201 for interior, zinc for budget
- Ask your customer where it’s going β don’t make the mistake I made in 2019
- Always warn about SS201 in coastal areas β cover yourself
How to Tell If Your Supplier Is Lying (Yes, It Happens)
1. Weight Test
Heavier is usually better. Here’s what we see:
- SS304 handle: 200-400g
- SS201 handle: 180-350g
- Zinc alloy handle: 150-300g
- Aluminum handle: 100-200g
2. Stainless Steel Test Liquid
Buy this cheaply online. Drop it on the handle:
- SS304: No change or very slow change
- SS201: Turns red in 1-3 minutes
3. Just Ask Us
We’ve been doing this 10 years. We’ll tell you the truth, even if it means losing a sale.
Conclusion
There’s no “perfect” material β it depends on where it’s going and who it’s for.
- SS304: Safest bet for all Nigeria (coastal and inland)
- SS201: Great for inland, avoid coastal
- Zinc Alloy: Best value for budget interior doors
- Aluminum: Good for modern projects
- Brass: Luxury only
